Hidetada Yamagishi was born on 30 June 1973 and grew up in Obihiro, Hokkaidō and is a widely known Japanese IFBB professional bodybuilder that has also made it into the top ten of the Mr. Olympia competition. During his youth, he played rugby and he started lifting while at Hokkaidō Sapporo Asahigaoka High School. He then continued his education at Waseda University, where he continued weightlifting and bodybuilding more seriously. He writes, quoted from GaspariNutriton, I played rugby in my teens. I wanted to gain weight to enhance my performance. At the time, I only weighed around 130lbs but through weight training, I was able to gain almost 50lbs by time I graduated from high school. After I graduated, I was looking for something new I could pour my energy into, and finally found my passion, bodybuilding.
Yamagishi only stands about 5 feet 7 inches, yet competes in the open class, regardless of the fact that many shorter bodybuilders compete in the 202 (now 212) and under class. Hidetada has released a number of few training videos/DVDs, one of the latest being called A Warrior’s Fight. He has also made television appearances in Japan and was featured on ESPN before the 2010 Mr. Olympia competition. Currently, he is sponsored by Gaspari Nutrition, where various training videos / series’ of him have been posted.
Hidetada is married and resides in the United States as well as Japan. He has a few degrees, one being a degree in Sports Nutrition Science and the other being a National Certification in Japan for Acupuncture Therapy. He has been competing for over 18 years and bodybuilding for more than 20 years, according to his blog on GaspariNutrition. His philosophy on training, quoted from his blog entry, is to ”Push yourself beyond your comfort zone”.
