Not doing so great at last years Mr. Olympia, and seemingly losing his momentum in the sport of bodybuilding, this competition didn’t seem like it would yield Melvin Anthony as the winner. As all were saying, this would be Tony Freeman’s show to lose. Melvin came in marvelous condition, arguably the best he has ever competed in before, and walked away with a victory. Hidetada, also coming in what would be considered his best and sharpest competition shape, got second place. Toney Freeman, who we expected to steal the show, was lacking in his conditioning. In an interview with Shawn Ray and Jay Cutler, Toney would use this Phoenix Pro to boost his momentum up to the Arnold Classic which was just a few weeks away, just as he did transitioning from the Mr. Olympia to the Sacramento pro. Unfortunately Toney was off, and seemed to be carrying a lot of water. He ended up placing 3rd.
