For some people, choosing the right gym may not seem as important as it actually is. There are many different variables as to what can give you the best workout and experience to help you reach your fitness goals. While some things may not be very important to other people, you may find similar qualities in a gym help you excel personally. There are many things to look for when choosing a gym to help you obtain the best combination of price and quality.

First and foremost, for most people in today’s economy, is most likely going to be how much you’re paying for your gym membership. Most gym’s will average around 30 dollars per month, but you must also take into consideration the various startup fee’s associated with your membership. Paying 40 dollars per month may actually be much better than paying 35 per month if the membership costing 35 has 100+ dollars in initiation fee’s.

Taking the price out of the picture, look at the overall size of the gym. Before thinking about the training services and programs the gym provides, make sure that you have all the equipment, space, and facilities that would make up a suitable gym for you. Does it have enough cardio equipment? Is the free weight area big enough and have enough exercise stations? Is there a pool or a basketball court? While this may not be important to you initially, you never know when you might want to partake in a different activity at your gym to get a good workout.

How does your gym look in terms of cleanliness? Is the equipment new? Because there are so many sweating people coming into the gym every day, touching equipment and spreading germs, make sure that the overall condition of the gym appears to be clean and measures are taken to keep the overall hygiene in check. This will prevent you from getting sick and is generally a must have.

While most people do not care who is working out in the same gym with them or what services the staff members provide, the community to a lot of people is very important. Having strict dress codes and rules may actually preserve your workout without distractions from grunters, weight-droppers, etc. On the contrary, if you prefer more of a hardcore atmosphere or one in which people won’t nag at you for not setting your 200 lb dumbbells down lightly, then look for a gym with less troublesome rules. Do the staff members try to assist you? Are they friendly? Look for the general gym community, including both staff members, instructors, and fellow gym-goers, as another thing to check off in your perfect gym list.

Can the gym fit into your schedule? For those that work strange hours, having a 24 hour gym or a gym that is open late might be more suitable. If you are off during the day, going to a gym that is not open very late may work fine for you. It’s all about getting everything that you want without having to sacrifice other benefits from the gym.

If there is anything else in which you feel you might need to check out, look to see if a staff member will walk you through the gym on a tour. They might be able to point out certain features that you would not have normally seen browsing on your own. Gyms may offer trial memberships for you to try the gym out for a week. Give it a shot to see if you like the general atmosphere of the gym. A staff member giving you a tour might be able to point out certain features that you would have never known about.
